David is a fully qualified medical practitioner and eye surgeon. He trained at the Sydney Eye Hospital before graduating with the Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Ophthalmologists in 1988. He undertook further training in surgery and diseases of the retina at the Lions' Eye Institute in Perth, WA. This was followed by work in the USA in ocular oncology with Prof Jerry Shields. David returned to Sydney in 1991 and has been in private practice since then. He does regular cataract surgery and other general ophthalmology. His primary interest is in eye diseases affecting the retina. He is able to carry out all forms of laser treatment (other than refractive laser), Lucentis and Avastin injections for macular degeneration, and surgery of the vitreous and retina. He is particularly interested in treatment of diabetic retinopathy, age related macular degeneration, macular holes, retinal detachment, retinal vein occlusion, retinitis pigmentosa and other retinal degenerations, eye trauma, and optic nerve disease.
He has been Head of Department of Ophthalmology at Concord Hospital and remains a visiting medical officer there. He operates at NSW Private Eye Centre Ashfield, Hunters Hill Private Hospital, and Dalcross Private Hospital. He is a member of the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps and holds the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. David is a member of the Australian Medical Association, a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmologists, and is a registered medical practitioner in Australia. He presents regularly at ophthalmological meetings and is active in teaching of trainee ophthalmologists, other doctors, and medical students. He is a keen sailor, photographer, cyclist and outdoor enthusiast.
